Have finally reached the point where I would be totally fine living in Madagascar forever. I am having some serious difficulty with the fact that I have to leave in a month or so. It sucks this is the only place on the planet that feels like home to me. Will try to extend my stay, I don't ever want to leave. There's literally nothing for me outside of madagascar...well I guess there isn't anything inside either...except maybe unrequited love, lemurs, and my favorite forest on the planet.

11:13PM - 5 THINGS
1)SPOTIFY IS OFFICIALLY THE GREATEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO MUSIC! It's like everyone in the world is sharing their itunes with you and you can take it anywhere!! AMAZING! Makes me not as pissed off about not having pandora here.
2)Boss HAAAATES ME, but LOVE that I was asked to write a book chapter about nocturnal lemurs!Including aye-ayes!! Probably highlight of my life
3)i miss madagascar like crazy...and unrelated...wtf is twitter?! I know I live in a jungle half the year...but still...twitter, jon and katie, heidi and spencer, jonas brothers...what the hell is all this shit???!! It's so weird the things that happen when I'm away.
4)THIS KASABIAN ALBUM IS SO EPIC!! Some of it seems so cheesy for such trash talking musicians, but I LOVE it. IT feels like I'm literally at woodstock, during the goldrush, in a back alley in old russia, eating candy floss at a cemetery. I don't know how they do it. I always raise the bar so high for them too. The second album...eh. First one...made me name them one of my favorite bands ever, this 3rd album (West ryder pauper lunatic asylum) solidified them as my faves. Plus, how can you hate a band that has Noel Fielding in a music video?! Tunes I like or that were unexpected are: Fire, Thick as Thieves, Underdog,Secret Alphabets, Ladies and Gentlemen. I might get sick of it soon...but not right now! mmmmmmmm
5)So sick of the fucking midnight sun!!!!I WANT SLEEP

6:37PM - phantasmagoria
Sifting through old journal entries all day today, and just generally living in the past...oh yes, all while watching bollywood film 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' which is awesome btw.I can't believe my friend convinced me to watch bollywood movies, but he did and I couldn't be more glad (unless he gave me a billion dollars, then I probably would be).
Nostalgia! It made me realize what a total fucking nutter I was/am? All the 40,000 posts about senor bellamy from muse were a bit disheartening. I mean..Muse WERE my life...for like at least 2 consecutive years. How sad. I don't even think I've given them a proper listen in at least an entire year.
I've been reading a lot lately (not scientific articles like I SHOULD be reading to finish that little pathetic hideous degree (phd) of mine. Nooo that would be beneficial, now why would I do that. Instead I've been reading well...science y books the best of which I think were 'Your Inner Fish' and 'Out of Eden'. And of course I celebrated darwin day by making a cake in the shape of a booby (a blue footed booby that is...perverts!). I looooove science. But then I really start to wonder things, and in the darwinian tradition, I've decided to start to document these stupid questions I have so that one day while reminiscing I can look back and think either a)what a stupid question! b)what an effing loser c)what happened to all the muse entries d)what the fuck was i on about? e)internet? what is that? (while watching tv through my contact lens tvs http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandte
1)Do old women with grandkids get menopause around the time that their children get pregnant with the grandbabies? Because the evolution of menopause is fascinating. It only happens in social societies (some whales, some monkeys, humans) where it would actually benefit to have your mom show you how to care for your new infant, and if this has been the case for a long time, there should be some sort of trend towards reproductive senescence around the time of your kid's peak in reproductive success. Then again nowadays birth control effs everything up
2)Are humans capable of going into daily torpor? This would prove to be RIDICU-fucking-lously useful/fun. And I'm almost convinced I have before. :)
3)Is attraction related to immune function and genetic background? Genetically it would make sense for people to be attracted to people from 'opposite' (geographically) ethnicities, because well there are a certain number of receptors on immune cells in humans, and you get them from both your mom AND dad, so ideally to have genetically viable and 'fit' offspring you would be attracted to people with the opposite receptors (so your kids can be healthy and immune to more things) and well, someone from the other side of the planet is likely to be immune to different diseases than you hence different immune receptors. SOOOO is this what makes phermoney smells? Like are you attracted to people who would theoretically help you make the healthiest babies?
4)I'm bored with myself already but am in looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
5)I recently met a dude named Magnus Tingsek and have been talking to him lately...brilliant brilliant dude. and very talented. Check him out, I love this song
6)Why am I numbering things? I have SOOOO much work to do
7) I'm COMING TO THE US again!! I'll be going to NY first for a few weeks, Chicago for a week, and Madison Wisconsin for two weeks. LET ME KNOW if you'll be anywhere nearby and we can hang out! woot.
8)My friend is writing a novel and I'm helping her with 'research' and it really makes me want to quit my job and write fiction! And she has the BEST idea for the book launch. Are things just easier in finland? because it is such a small country? I mean the book is in english...
9)I need some help deciding between a few final photos for my coffee table/madagascar photo book (see previous entry? something like that)...help?
I love this one because it is a tadpole that is not completely a frog yet, but I'm not sure it is good enough or that people would care to look at it. Can you help me choose 4 photos from the following? I can't have too many frog pictures...no idea how to embed photos into here, here are the links
It's a gecko that looks like a dead leaf...not just a random dead leaf :)

10:33AM - THIS IS AMAZING
WHAT A GENIUS IDEA FOR A BUSINESS!!!!!! Im working on a maddyland photo one now. all proceeds go to purchase deworming products and doctor visits to the people in Ranomafana.
PS-sorry about not answering in the last post...the laptop i got is some toshiba satellite derivative, i forgot the name now, but it is a custom edition with a weird pattern on the top and on the keys (which i hate!) but the keys are comfortable and the speakers make me drooooool. hmmm maybe my speakers before were just THAT bad

5:26PM - my soul mate
It was sooooooooo good to meet up with him in the north of france last weekend
still smiley about it.
I'm hoping barcelona this week doesn't pale in comparison to france.
Hmm and I REALLY hope that Edinburgh doesn't suck in a few weeks!
I know madagascar wont let me down next month, but to be honest...north of france...with my walnut...INCREDIBLE. walnut and cashew were finally together. le sigh. it's just a shame that we will always be stuck in the roles of long distance friends.
im boooooored...cant wait to get into the field...with my hawaiian field assistant :) How I chose her out of all the applicants, I don't know. I just hope I made the right choice and she isn't like a psycho serial lemur killer in disguise.

10:11PM - I'm on TV!
My tv debut is hilarious! I can't believe I was dubbed. Wicked awesome. And my mouse lemurs are pretty damn adorable. At 4 minutes, my name on the screen, and "Biologist!!!" Then a whole interview about my lemurs! Anyone who knows me totally knows that that was my dream! Anyway, this is my 10 minutes of Italian fame:
On a similar note, when I go back to Madagascar in august I'm going to be doing a video podcast every 2 weeks and then uploading them for people to watch my jungle adventures (how i didnt have someone videotape me falling into 1.5 meters of rice paddy "waste" I'll never know. Or being attacked by a bushpig! Or the grasshopper and his 5 2 meter long tapeworms exploding into the puddle! that shit needs to be documented and shown to the world).
next august before going to madagascar I'm making a 10 day stop in Tanzania to climb MOUNT KILIMANJARO!! WOOT WOOT! Who wants to come with?! I'm dead serious. It's cheaper with a group and it apparently only takes like 6 days. Anyway I'm thinking of podcasting that too. But fret not dear friends my hideous face won't be in these podcasts. I learned from the Italians, when my face in on the tv screen children cry.
Malagasy Jungle Tales
And To the Top of Kilimanjaro (OBVIOUSLY with more creative titles but I can't be bothered with that right now)...will be fun.
does anyone even use livejournal anymore or is it all blogs now?
so long farewell, adieu

12:45AM - i may be insane
I'm doing a non-oprah 21 day body cleanse. That means no caffeine (no coffee?? Im gonna be such a cranky b*tch), no meat, no dairy (AHHHHHHH! but i have mozzarella in my fridge! Also I live off of cheese), no carbs (double ahhh). So if im so "Ahh" about it why am I doing it you might ask. Well, my numerous cups of coffee per day and chocolate and all the crap I put into my body on a daily basis is really making me look and feel awful! I didn't have to worry about this stuff in the jungle because...well i basically wasnt eating crap! (ok on occasion, but not a billionth as much as I have been since I returned). And living in Madagascar was really hard when I first went because I was so unhealthy...and now with my return approximately 3 months away...I have to change my diet and I have to exercise to prepare myself for the intense AWESOME hikes that await me.
Why am I writing an entry about this? Basically so I actually do it. Day 1-lemon water is not gonna be fun..but once i can get some fruit in there it should be fine...after all... THE BERRIES ARE OUT IN FINLAND!!!! DELISH!!!!!!! also have i mentioned how much I looooove Finland in the summer?!??!? and lately ive been super into finnish music...well, finnish bands...Scandinavian bands...some are just so great. im thoroughly impressed. I went to a global music festival today with janneke where we ate nepalese and chinese food and walked through hundreds of market tents selling things from all over the world! There was even a Madagascar table!! awesome. and the sun just barely setting right now...at 1 am.....amazing. I love it here.
But I've just realized how absolutely USELESS I have been since i returned from madagascar. I WILL NOT make that mistake again next year. I have sooo much to accomplish in a few months...I cant believe this has creeped up on me so fast!!!!! AHHHH I still need to finish writing/submit a paper!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH running out of time......
and I had a nightmare last night that I got myself into a horrid situation and got fired big time infront of a bunch of people at a conference. im useless and so unaccomplished. no wonder ive been so depressed lately...a year has passed and I have NOTHING to show for it. and im getting OLD.
I just had to bitch.
the end. have a lovely day.

"Do you have a bathtub with goat water"
"Did you know if you put a hamburger in the toaster.... it will say 'HAP-PY BIRTHDAY!!!"
"Here hold my cookie, I don't wanna look unprofessional"
"What?! You're 16? Well that's the legal age of consent in Nevada"
"But we're in california"
"That's why I never leave my house without my 50 states age of consent laminate card"
Ok so I normally hate hate HATE RENO 911!!! but the crazy bum is pretty damn funny...

HAve I mentioned how much I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE finland in the summer time?!?!?!?!
I couldnt stop smiling today...perfect weather!!! NO CLOUDS!!! BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN UP TIL 10:30!!!
I've NEVER experienced weather like this anywhere in the world (except for finland last summer).
It is so perfect that like I want to punch myself every second im inside!
I've decided to video-podcast when I got back to madagascar....every week or so....but I need ideas to make it look....NOT STUPID!
I don't want to make a mockery of my work....but I dont want it to be boring either!
I mean i could give myself challenges...like on top chef, or project runway or something....but how would that work?!

going to stockholm tomorrow....which I guess would be a big deal if i was going from the states, but considering it is just a BALTIC SEA away....it's only an overnight trip. Woohoo!! I'm going with Janne and Janneke for my birthday and I can't freaking wait! I LOVE THEM! I'll also apparently be meeting someone that I've wanted to meet up with for...oh I don't know..like THREE YEARS! Im not gonna lie, I'm actually really nervous. Then...when we come back...2 days later....IM GOING TO THE USA!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!! AFTER AN ENTIRE YEAR OF NOT SEEING ANYONE!
I am psyched! Granted, I am going for a conference...but Im going home before and after..and then... to HOUSTON!! to meet with T and P!!!! REAL MEXICAN MEXICO FOOD!!! hurray! That is like all i wanted while in the jungle.
Lately I've been totally loving my friends here...they really make me so happy. Especially the lunch bunch. I have yet to have lunch with them and NOT spit milk out of my nose from laughter. They're incredible! And so international, so there's always an accent joke (mainly the frenchies). i love them. I just hope that when I go home my friends haven't forgotten me, and that we can still have conversation easily and still joke around and stuff.
that is all.

Anyway the list of the 25 most endangered primates just came out, so i thought I would share. I would say it is a BIT of a problem when the 4 most endangered (more than the gorilla!!) are all found in the same country.
this sucks. Honestly, I give the forests of madagascar 5 years, and all of the lemurs maybe 20. No more than that for sure. I saw it burning almost every day.
So you better go buy tickets to visit soon if you ever wanna see a wild lemur (who am i kidding, i doubt anyone normal does). Anyway this made me sad...especially when im writing a paper on the greater bamboo lemur, and i got to hang out with 6 of them almost everyday for the 4 months i was there. This is so phat!
I'm not sure how, but i ended up staying here last night, 3 hours away from where i started off
The Palace of the Lost City in Sun City. Also I decided I'm sooo coming back here sometime. It would be so cool to have like a wedding here or something. There's freaking zebras and giraffes right outside but its still sooo luxurious. I think they have like helicopter rides to the top of a mountain as one of the breakfast options!
Jo-burg was fun, i met a starving artist Belgian named Harold who is absolutely gorgeous and an amazing artist....but he's belgian, so i can't exactly trust him. And I met a malaysian girl named Liyi, and she is awesome! So we've been traveling together. Went on a game drive and spotted ALL the african wildlife, minus the lion....but a cheetah running after a klipspringer!!!!! AMAZING! and the klipspringer family loved me!
Monkeys/baboons everywhere. whoa whoa whoa. They're stalking me. seriously. One walked onto the balcony of our AMAZING ROOM (like it has a jacuzzi and we got bathrobes and slippers)and tried to eat our pringles. It's so sad. I wish they were unexposed to humans. oh well. i cant do anything about it.
We went to a flea market and bargained like mad for some giraffe earrings (for my amylove!) and met a ton of real south africans. Then we had a braai (huge bbq) with the americans dutch and belgish.
I love it here. surprise surprise. I think i just love anywhere that isn't rochester. WILD WILDLIFE!!!!!! EEEEEEE! IM SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT SERIOUSLY LOOKS JUST LIKE THE LION KING!!! everything!
I found 10 Rands on the ground and put them in a slot machine and won R400! only like €40 but still. that made my day.
So this hotel is in the middle of an ancient volcano. so cool. Sun city is seriously disney world of wildlife.
and my conference is actually INSIDE of a game reserve!!! at one of the camps. awesome.
so i should be in jo-burg but because i dont ever plan anything somehow i ended up in pilanesburg eating grapes in a bathrobe watching monkeys.
wooo south africa!
presentation? what's that? oh yes. im so fired.
im going to the bridge of time now....i guess it shakes every 30 minutes or something. like indiana jones. so much for stickin it out in the wild with my sleeping bag.

yeah im sure ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL the TV watching around the WHOLE WORLD and neon GIANT LED lights and speakers and electricity and soundboards and air conditioning...etc etc etc that went into watching LIVE EARTH today were REALLY great for the whole global warming/sustainability thing.
what a stupid idea

I just last minute booked my last night in africa in an elephant walk lodge, where elephants, giraffes and lions are outside your window!
I should be at work. but im not. im working on my presentation here at home. oh dikke vette schijt, i have to go to work.
I'm going to Quiz tonight!!!! Which is totally a pub quiz like on that one episode of the Office (uk)!!! when they all go to quiz for Tim's birthday...and he has Hat FM....and they throw his shoe over a building. HAHAHA. that's really the only reason we're going....to be like ricky gervais.
oh and my kitty is TO DIE for. I love him sooo much. except when he turns off my computer and unplugs the internet...for real.
the sun is starting to go down!!! it finally got darkish yesterday!
goodbye sleepless nights!
